• 10 Things You Should Know about Prayer

    1. Prayer is talking with God.

It’s easy to complicate prayer. There is a place for detailed, theologically-precise definitions of prayer. I could write a paragraph-length one that included most of the points found in this article. And while it might be a thorough and helpful explanation (more than a definition) of prayer, it wouldn’t be memorable. So while there is a lot of important biblical information to understand about prayer, at its essence prayer is simply talking with God.

    2. Prayer is acceptable to God only in Jesus’s name.

All access to God—including prayer—is possible only through the merits of who Jesus is and what he has done. Jesus made this plain in John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” But to pray “in Jesus’s name” is not accomplished simply by adding (often mindlessly) those words at the end of a prayer; rather, it is to pray with reliance on what Jesus has done for us and not the worthiness of who we are or what we have done. See also the emphasis made by Jesus on praying in his name in John 14:13 and John 16:23-24.

  • What Is Prayer?

Kevin is searching for a job. He needs to provide for his family, but he also wants to find work that makes a positive difference in his community. Before each interview he asks God to help him favorably impress the interviewer with his skills and experience.

Is prayer more than just asking for what you want?

Elise is the mother of three young children, and they are all with her on a rushed trip to the grocery store. Her youngest is hungry and crying, and her two toddlers are removing items from the lowest shelves and playing a spirited game of “football” with them while other shoppers stare disapprovingly. “Help me keep it together, Jesus,” she whispers under her breath.

  • Everything you need to know about prayer

Prayer is instant access to God. This is hard to fathom, because we do not have consistent, infallible, instant access to anyone else on the planet.

As helpful as our smartphones are, we still have to deal with glitches when Wi-Fi fails, cell phone signals drop out, or the phone stops working for no apparent reason. But while man-made gadgets can and do fail, prayer never fails.

No matter where we are or what we’re doing, we always have immediate and unfailing communication with God.

  • About this site…

I grabbed the domain DYPF.com along time ago. Four-letter dot coms were getting rare and I had used these initials when I wrote my first novel to remind myself to pray each time I began writing. I held on to the domain because I thought someday, maybe, it could be like the WWJD thing, and become popular.

Fast forward to this year, I decided to get the domain DidYouPrayFirst.org and make a blog devoted to articles about prayer. I’m finally doing that now.
